The biophysical profile (BPP) is an assessment that uses a non-stress test and ultrasound to determine variables that indicate the status of the fetus and whether or not the fetus needs to be delivered. By ultrasound, the fetus’s movement, tone, and breathing, as well as pockets of amniotic fluid volume are assessed. This is combined with as assessment of the fetal heart rate reactivity in response to fetal movement. The lung profile, amniocentesis, doppler velocimetry, and contraction stress tests are not involved in the BPP.
