A 3-day-old infant should have at least 3 wet diapers each day. Any fewer than 3 per day could indicate dehydration. Dehydration is fairly common after delivery and from breastfed infants who do not get enough to eat. Meconium stools should pass by the third day. Dark tarry stools at one week are likely not meconium and could be something else. The baby’s urine may be dark yellow, especially if dehydrated, but not dark brown. This could indicate hyperbilirubinemia and bilirubin in the urine. Babies do not need to be changed unless they have soiled diapers.
