When preparing a patient for hemodialysis, the nurse must assess body weight, heart rate and rhythm, and lab values that would be affected by the dialysis. Labs usually include BUN (generally not creatinine in the case ESRD), electrolyte levels, liver panels, and CBC. The AV fistula site should be inspected. Other general assessments include the patient's understanding of the purpose and procedure, and reconciling patient medications. Capillary refill is not routinely assessed prior to hemodialysis. Urine output is largely irrelevant in ESRD, and does not influence nursing management.
