The teach-back method is an effective way to determine the success of teaching; this method also determines if the patient understands when to take the medicine and why he is taking it. Although it may be helpful to instruct the patient to separate the pills for the week into a pill storage box, this method does not determine if the patient understands why he is taking the medicine, which can be helpful for compliance. The patient can read at the third-grade level; instructing the patient to draw on a clock when he should take the medication is probably not necessary and may embarrass the patient. Reading the instructions on the pill bottle may assess the patient’s ability to read but does not assess the patient’s understanding of the teaching.
