The tip of the peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) should rest in the superior vena cava. A PICC should not be inserted in the brachial veins, which are deeper in the arm and proximal to the brachial artery. Inserting the PICC too far, into the right atrium of the heart, can cause arrhythmias and cardiovascular complications. Not inserting the PICC far enough and allowing it to reside distally to the superior vena cava increases the risk of extravasation and should be avoided when possible.
