Autolytic debridement uses the body’s own enzymes to remove dead/necrotic tissue. Hydrocolloid dressing or other means to create a moist wound environment promotes autolytic debridement. The sloughed necrotic tissue can then be easily pulled away from the wound bed. Maggots specifically consume rotten flesh, so while they can debride wounds, the process is biodebridement. Papain/urea is enzymatic debridement, but not autolytic, since the enzymes come from a source other than the patient. Cold knife surgical removal is simple wound debridement that involves cutting dead or dying tissue away.
