The patient who has a recent history of falls is at an increased risk for another fall. Having a staff member sit with a patient who is a fall risk has been shown to reduce the frequency of falls. Assessing the patient’s fall risk by itself will not reduce the patient’s risk of falls, unless an appropriate intervention is implemented in response to the assessment. While not attaching a patient to any kind of monitoring equipment may reduce the risk of falls, this is not an appropriate intervention, as monitoring the patient is more medically important than reducing fall risk. Moving the patient to a carpeted area is both impractical and has not been shown to reduce the risk of falls.
