Quality improvement refers to the system of collecting data, analyzing the practices and performance with aims to improve efficiency and effectiveness of the current system, and implementing and testing necessary changes. The Institute of Medicine recommends the six objectives of improving healthcare: safety, effectiveness, patient-centeredness, timeliness, efficiency, and equitability. Equitability refers to the provision of the same standards of care to all patients regardless of socioeconomic status, ethnicity, gender, and personal beliefs and opinions. Patient-centeredness refers to the hospital’s responsiveness and respect to patient’s autonomy and preferences in healthcare. Efficiency refers to practices in preventing under-using and overusing of resources. Patient safety is the primary consideration in healthcare with the intent of promoting patient recuperation and preventing injuries.
