Informed consent is an official document that legally serves as evidence that the patient has agreed to the treatment or surgical procedure, after having a full understanding about the procedure, its indications, benefits, risks and alternatives. Legally, only the patient is allowed to provide consent. However, there are conditions that render patients permanently incapable of giving the consent like congenital conditions, such as Down syndrome and other types of intellectual disability and major psychiatric disorders. Alcoholic, comatose, and minor patients do not have the capacity to provide consent temporarily, not permanently.
