The patient receiving a blood transfusion who complains of flank pain may be experiencing a life-threatening transfusion reaction and must be seen first. A patient who is actively dying and for whom this is not unexpected is not a higher priority to assess than a patient who may be experiencing a transfusion reaction. A patient who has pain, while important, is a lower priority than a patient with a transfusion reaction. The patient with a chest tube that has been in for two days is not a higher priority to assess than a patient who may be experiencing a transfusion reaction.
