Doxazosin commonly contributes to orthostatic hypotension, a condition in which a patient’s blood pressure drops precipitously upon changing positions such as transferring from a sitting to standing position. Because of this, patients taking alpha-blockers such as doxazosin should be assessed for falls risk and actions should be taken to alleviate a potential fall. Doxazosin does not give rise to psychotic side effects. While patients taking beta-blockers should be carefully monitored for bradycardia since they restrict cardiac stimulation, doxazosin does not result in bradycardia because it’s mechanism of action involves dilation of vasculature to lower blood pressure (and relieve the constriction associated with BPH). Doxazosin does not cause an increased likelihood of hemorrhage.
