Abrupt cessation of benzodiazepines can be deadly; therefore, a wean plan must be instituted to ensure the patient can safely stop taking the medication. Telling the patient he or she might die from stopping the medication is not a therapeutic response. Another medication might be helpful to assist with withdrawal, but the nurse should include the patient in the discussion of a wean plan. The patient will not simply be uncomfortable after abruptly stopping the medication; the patient could die. Therefore, this is not an appropriate response.
