The hypothermic neonate may also be hypoglycemic due to increased energy use attempting to stay warm. Further vital sign assessment is warranted, but the nurse should assess for hypoglycemia prior to a blood pressure assessment as blood pressure is one of the less helpful vital signs in neonates. Education should be provided to the mother about how to keep her baby warm, but this is not the initial action. Once a glucose level is obtained, the nurse can report the findings to the provider.
