The START triage system utilizes the ABCs for prioritization – airway, breathing, circulation. Using this system, the patient to receive treatment first is the 68-year-old unresponsive patient with right-sided flail chest and a respiratory rate of 32. The second person to receive treatment is the patient bleeding from the deep laceration. These two patients would be triaged with a red tag indicating immediate treatment is necessary. The third person to receive care is the patient who has lost feeling in his legs but who is breathing appropriately. This patient would be triaged with a yellow tag, which indicates the patient’s injuries are not immediately life-threatening. The patient who remains apneic even after appropriate airway positioning is labeled with a black triage tag, which means the patient is not likely to survive given the available resources. This patient may be treated if the other three are stabilized.
