Type 1 diabetes mellitus is caused by autoimmune destruction of pancreatic beta cells that results in insufficient insulin production. It is not caused by overeating of high-sugar foods, so the statement in which the parent blames him or herself for allowing her to overeat sweets requires further education. It is vital that the parents keep a selection of sugary foods and drinks available in case the child becomes hypoglycemic. The child will require frequent blood sugar testing and administration of insulin. When insulin dosing is changed and while the child is growing, it will be necessary to check the blood glucose levels through the night to ensure the child’s blood glucose levels are well-controlled.
