Non-pharmacologic means are an important aid in the prevention of thromboembolism, especially in hospitalized patients. Sequential compression devices, when used properly, are an effective aid in the prevention of thrombus formation, even in patients with limited or no mobility. They should not be used as monotherapy however and are best used in conjunction with anticoagulant therapy. Daily exercise does aid in the prevention of blood stasis but has not been linked to a direct antithrombotic effect. Vitamin K is a co-factor in multiple clotting reactions. In fact, vitamin K supplements would promote clotting. While adequate hydration may help prevent clotting, aggressive hydration is not needed.
