If a patient is unconscious requiring a life-saving blood transfusion, but the family is opposed for religious reasons and will not consent, the treatment team generally act to save the person’s life. However, if the transfusion could be delayed at all, every effort should be made to obtain court approval before proceeding to make sure that the family are heard.
