The newborn is at greatest risk for heat loss due to evaporation. At birth, the baby is wet with amniotic fluid that evaporates, decreasing the baby’s core temperature. Conduction, convection, and radiation are all sources of heat loss for infants, but the greatest concern is evaporation.
