Coworkers who are susceptible to infection, such as those who are immunocompromised or pregnant, should be notified of the risk and avoid entering the room. The patient should only be transported when necessary to prevent further transmission opportunities. When no airborne infection isolation rooms are available, it is appropriate to place the patient in a private room with the door closed and ask the patient to wear a mask. Susceptible persons who have been exposed should be notified and receive recommendation to be vaccinated as soon as possible. The nurse caring for a patient with an airborne infectious disease such as measles should wear a fit-tested N95 (or higher level) respirator; a surgical mask is inadequate.
