An indwelling urinary catheterization involves introduction of a catheter into bladder via urethra and is maintained in place in the bladder using a catheter balloon inflated with 5-10 mL of normal saline solution. It facilitates drainage of urine used for therapeutic and diagnostic purposes. Using a sterile technique, the nurse gently introduces the tube until the Y-shaped port is at the meatus or when the urine has started to drain. The nurse may use water-based lubrication or a lubricant with anesthetic cream to facilitate insertion.
