Belatacept use is contraindicated in patients who have a negative titer for Ebstein Barr due to an increased risk for post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder. Therefore, the most important lab result to evaluate is the Ebstein Barr virus titer. Belatacept can cause electrolyte derangements, so the labs should be monitored, but this is less important than the EBV titer. Complete blood cell counts should be monitored in all patients undergoing immunosuppressive therapy, but this is less of a priority than EBV titer. Belatacept use can lead to urinary tract infection, but it is not necessary to monitor the patient’s urine culture and urinalysis prior to initiating the medication.
