A pathologic fracture, or one that occurs without trauma due to infiltration of the bone with malignant cells, may occur in the patient with leukemia. Osteosarcoma presents with a mass near the epiphyseal plates of long bones, not pathologic fracture. Although Rickett’s can weaken the bone and increase risk for fracture, pathologic fractures are unlikely. Excessive bone resorption increases the risk for fracture, but this occurs with osteoporosis, which is associated with aging individuals.
