The patient with β-thalassemia major is at risk for iron overload due to the necessity for serial blood transfusions for symptom management. Chelation therapy is used to decrease iron stores. Plasmapheresis, continuous renal replacement therapy, and IV diphenhydramine and epinephrine are not used to treat iron overload.
