The patient receiving chemotherapy for breast cancer is at risk for mucositis. Food should be mild and not too hot or too cold to prevent inflammation and disruption of the oral mucosa. Highly-spiced food should be avoided due to the sores in the mouth. A soft-bristled toothbrush, not a firm-bristled one, should be used to decrease the risk for bleeding. Hard snacks such as tortilla chips or carrot/celery sticks should be avoided to prevent trauma to the gums.
