Pernicious anemia is an autoimmune disorder that preferentially occurs in individuals with other autoimmune disorders such as Addison disease (primary adrenocorticosteroid insufficiency), infertility (inability to conceive after actively trying for more than 1 year), ulcerative colitis (rectal bleeding and contiguous ulcerative lesions of the colon), and type I diabetes (elevated fasting blood glucose with low insulin level). Metabolic disorders such as hypercholesterolemia (xanthelasma and elevated LDL) and hypertension (resting blood pressure greater than 140/90 mmHg) are not associated with pernicious anemia.
