Following a scleral buckling procedure to repair a detached retina, care centers around maintaining a low intraocular pressure. An antiemetic should be administered for nausea in this patient to prevent the abrupt increase in intraocular pressure that occurs with vomiting. Assessing for bowel sounds, encouraging the patient to take small sips of water, and providing the patient with ginger ale and light crackers are less effective than an antiemetic at preventing vomiting.
