The front of the gown is considered contaminated. Therefore, the nurse instructs the student nurse to stop removal of PPE, use hand sanitizer or wash the hands with soap and water, then grasp the gown at the back to remove it. Although hand sanitizer should be utilized upon exiting the room, allowing the student to continue removing the PPE risks contamination of the clothes and skin with MRSA. The nurse should provide in-the-moment teaching about MRSA transmission prevention, not wait until the end of the day; this places patients and staff at risk for MRSA transmission. Although the nurse should stop the student from removing the gown and instruct the student to grasp the back of the gown to remove it, the student nurse should perform hand hygiene after contaminating the hands and before attempting to remove the gown correctly.
