Acute grief is the initial stages of grief that occur soon after a death. This is a normal response to the loss of a loved one. Anticipatory grief occurs before a loved one has passed away. When death is expected (e.g. patient in hospice), the family considers what life will be like without the patient. Complicated grief is excessive grieving that interferes with daily activities. Persistent bereavement is a chronic process, longer than one hour.
