An ectopic pregnancy is not viable since it has implanted in a tissue other than the uterus, in this cases, the fallopian tube. An untreated ectopic pregnancy can rupture, abort into the abdominal cavity, or spontaneously resolve. Spontaneously resolution does not result in a successful pregnancy, however. It simply means the embryo resorbs without consequence. Thus, “waiting two weeks” will never result in a successful pregnancy. The first two outcomes (rupture or abortion) are rapidly fatal without corrective surgery, and so ectopic pregnancies are rarely permitted to proceed without treatment. Telling the woman that the embryo is dead, while possibly true, is not the best way to respond. It is also best to refer to the tissue as an embryo rather than a fetus. The nurse does not need to speak with the physician to answer this question, though the physician can be informed of the discussion.
