The Kleihauer-Betke test is a way to detect fetomaternal hemorrhage that occurs when there is a break in the placental barrier, which could have occurred during the motor vehicle accident. The test detects fetal hemoglobin in the mother’s blood. If the test is positive, the mother should receive RhoGAM (IgG Anti-D (Anti-Rh)). A non-stress test can also be used to evaluate the health of the fetus (but not instead of the Kleihauer-Betke test). The coagulation panel, complete blood count, and D-dimer are all appropriate tests to run on the pregnant woman, but they do not assess the status of the pregnancy itself.
