When dealing with an electrical fire, never use a class A (water) fire extinguisher. Water is a good conductor and may lead to electrocution if used on an electrical fire. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends using a class C (dry chemical) fire extinguisher on a fire involving electrical equipment. As always, use the PASS technique when discharging the extinguisher – pull, aim, squeeze, sweep. Since the fire extinguisher is not appropriate, the best course of action for the nurse is to evacuate immediately. It is not appropriate to try to throw a blanket over the fire or simply stand by and watch the fire. Both are dangerous.
