This patient presents with signs and symptoms of Steven-Johnson syndrome, namely a prodrome of fever, chills, sore throat, and myalgia, followed by bullous desquamating lesions with surrounding erythema. The cause of this patient’s condition is likely drug induced from lamotrigine, which is linked to Steven-Johnson syndrome. The initial step in treating drug-induced Steven-Johnson syndrome is to withdraw the causative agent.

Systemic and topical corticosteroids are indicated in the treatment of Steven-Johnson syndrome, but withdrawal of any probable drug causes should come before initiating immunosuppressive therapy. Recent studies have shown the benefit of IVIG in the treatment of Steven-Johnson syndrome, but discontinuation of the causative agent should also be the first step. Cutaneous allografts are an important part of the treatment of Steven-Johnson syndrome, which help heal desquamated areas and prevent secondary infection.
