Involving the patient in the transferring process will facilitate compliance with nursing instructions, and can reduce the workload on staff, helping to prevent staff injury. Nursing assistants may attempt to transfer some fall risk patients by themselves, but should check with the nurse if they are unsure if it is safe. Each person involved in a patient transfer should not be responsible for more than 50lbs; a patient who weighs 400lbs will take at least eight people to safely transfer. Some types of transfers for paralyzed patients may not require lift equipment.
