A meta-analysis is the quantitative evaluation of all available randomized controlled trials for a specific topic. It provides the highest level of evidence from which to develop a process improvement project. Although randomized controlled trials are a good source of evidence, the quantitative evaluation of multiple RCTs is better. Critically-appraised articles and cohort studies are acceptable sources of evidence, but they are not as good as meta-analyses.
