Anti-inflammatory and immune modulator medications are the mainstays of therapy for multiple sclerosis and cause immunosuppression, which places the patient at risk for life-threatening infections. The patient may experience pain, but this is not the greatest concern for the patient. Electrolyte imbalances and electrocardiogram abnormalities may occur with multiple sclerosis therapy, but these are of less concern than the increased risk for infection.
