Diplopia, facial drooping, diffuse muscle weakness, difficulty swallowing, and shallow respirations indicate myasthenia gravis in a young adult female. To diagnose myasthenia gravis, edrophonium chloride is administered intravenously; if the patient’s symptoms of muscle weakness improve drastically, the patient has myasthenia gravis. Atropine must be at the bedside in case the patient gets markedly worse but is not diagnostic of myasthenia gravis. Alteplase is administered to patients with thromboembolic stroke. Physostigmine is an anticholinesterase drug that is used to treat anticholinergic overdose.
