Before pharmacologic agents are explored, education about good sleep hygiene is important for individuals who complain of poor sleep on a regular basis. An hour nap after work disrupts nighttime sleep and should be limited to 20-30 minutes, if they occur at all. Exercise is important for good sleep; a short walk is not too strenuous to disrupt sleep. Indigestion-causing foods should be avoided in individuals who get indigestion; as this patient does not get indigestion, this is an unnecessary education point. Caffeine and other stimulants close to bedtime can impair sleep; however, this patient doesn’t drink caffeine after lunch. Heavy alcohol intake close to bedtime can impair the patient’s ability to stay asleep; a glass of wine with dinner is not considered, “heavy” alcohol intake.
