In right-sided heart failure, the right ventricle has a decreased ability to deliver the deoxygenated blood back from the rest of the body to the lungs. This leads to ascites and lower extremity edema. Orthopnea and pulmonary edema are associated with left-sided heart failure. Weight gain from fluid accumulation, rather than weight loss, is usually associated with heart failure.
