Vaccination against serogroup B is available only for people older than 10 years who are at increased risk for infection. The vaccine is available for people between 16 and 23 years at normal risk. Meningococcal infections have been decreasing yearly for most strains but infections by serogroup B have been on the rise among young adults. Meningococcal meningitis presents as expected with high fever and meningeal signs, but the characteristic petechial rash associated with meningococcemia usually occurs over the trunk and legs, not the whole body. First year college students living in residence halls should receive Meningococcal B and Meningococcal ACYW immunization.
