Involuntary movements, especially of the lips, face and hands, called tardive dyskinesia are a side effect of anti-dopaminergic medications, especially first-generation antipsychotics. These movements are not normal and are an indication to immediately discontinue the offending medication. Some of these involuntary movements are permanent and do not stop even if the medication is discontinued. Tardive dyskinesia is not caused by any known neurodegenerative process.
