In patients taking typical antipsychotics medications, the nurse should be especially aware of the development of tardive dyskinesia, which is characterized by slow rhythmic writhing movement and repetitive stereotypical facial tics, such as grimacing or smacking of the lips. It is important to be on the lookout for tardive dyskinesia because it is irreversible and should prompt immediate discontinuation of the medication. Sedation, lethargy, seizures, and weight gain are seen in typical antipsychotics but are reversible upon discontinuation of the medication.
